The Manual-Only, Retro-Striped M2: BMW's Turbo Design Edition Honors a 2002 Automotive Icon

The BMW 2002 is more than just a classic coupe; it's a pillar of the company's heritage. A true purist's machine, it helped forge the identity of the modern high-performance BMWs we cherish today, laying the foundation for legendary machines like the 2 Series and M3. It was the "Ultimate Driving Machine" before the slogan even existed.

Now, BMW is paying proper homage to its roots. Meet the new M2 Turbo Design Edition, a special model that resurrects the iconic tricolor livery that first adorned the legendary 2002 Turbo from 1973 to 1975—and the execution is fantastic.

A Hand-Painted Homage

Finished exclusively in crisp Alpine White, the M2 Turbo Design Edition stands out with a striking, retro aesthetic.

  • Exterior Graphics: It features meticulously hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes on the hood and trunk lid, a testament to the original's brazen racing spirit. An offset tricolor stripe also runs the length of the standard carbon fiber roof.

  • The Mirrored Badge: A bold, black "Turbo" graphic spans the Power Dome on the hood. Following the tradition of the original 2002 Turbo, this lettering is reversed, designed to be read correctly in the rearview mirror of the car you are passing.

  • Wheel Choice: Standard black M Dual-Spoke wheels are included, but the true enthusiasts will opt for the visually arresting Matte Gold Bronze M Performance wheels (a $6,266 option) that complete the vintage-race-car look perfectly. A subtle carbon fiber spoiler adds a modern, aggressive touch to the trunk lid.

Manual-Only Power

True to the spirit of its manually-shifted forefather, the M2 Turbo Design Edition is offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, placing the driving experience firmly in the driver's hands.

  • Engine: The power comes from BMW’s acclaimed twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine.

  • Performance: It delivers the same potent figures as the upgraded M2—473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque—propelling the coupe from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

Exclusive Interior Touches

The retro theme carries into the cabin with thoughtful, limited-edition details.

  • Unique Trim: The door sill plates feature a special "M2 turbo" script, and a period-correct "Turbo" logo is prominently positioned just ahead of the shifter on the center console.

  • Seating: The M Sport seats are trimmed in Black Vernasca Leather with signature tricolor M accent stitching. For track-day aficionados, the optional M Carbon bucket seats ($4,500) are also available with the same tri-color detailing.

Limited Edition, Premium Price: This slice of BMW history comes at a premium. The M2 Turbo Design Edition starts at $84,075 (including a $1,175 destination charge), a nearly $15,000 upcharge over the base M2. With BMW confirming it will be offered in "extremely limited" quantities, securing one of these manual-only throwbacks will be a true test of a fan's dedication.

Facelift For Bavarian Police Force BMW Vehicles

For the better part of 20 years, Bavarian police cars were manufactured with silver BMW 3 series vehicles. Prior to the silver color scheme, these vehicles sported a white base coat. Recently, the Bavarian government has decided to revamp their BMW police vehicles in terms of a color scheme. The new color scheme draws inspiration from the nostalgic white base coat used prior to 2003.  Modeled after their previously utilized retro white, blue, and yellow color scheme, new Bavarian BMW police vehicles have gone back to their roots by shedding the apparently outdated silver and green paint job. All new Bavarian police vehicle will be manufactured from BMW 3 Series Touring models with the new color scheme. This shift comes primarily from BMW's discontinuation of the Glacier Silver base color for the 3 series, but a higher resale value for white vehicles might also be a variable.  In contrast to the prior white Bavarian police BMWs, the new vehicles will be manufactured with a Mine...
