The G90 M5 sedan and G99 M5 Touring are slated to receive their own dedicated mid-cycle updates, drawing heavily from the upcoming changes headed to the core 5 Series range. Early test mules wrapped in heavy camouflage initially hinted at a radical redesign, lead-footing rumors of a complete front end overhaul. Updated reports clarify that the 5 Series family will not adopt the full Neue Klasse identity, which seamlessly merges horizontal kidney grilles into the headlight clusters on dedicated electric models. Instead, the mid-cycle refresh relies on subtle exterior tweaks, including reshaped headlight graphics, minor bumper revisions, and updated rear taillight signatures. While camouflage on recent test vehicles gave the impression of smaller front grilles, a horizontal slat positioned above the front license plate on spotted prototypes indicates a refined, evolutionary grille design rather than a total resize.

Massive Cabin Overhaul and iDrive X

Though exterior updates remain conservative, the interior receives a total transformation, adopting the radical cabin design introduced on the iX3. The traditional dashboard layout makes way for BMW iDrive X, which completely removes the long-standing rotary iDrive controller in favor of a touch-heavy and projection-based user interface. This lineup reflects BMW's revised naming strategy, which drops the trailing "i" from gasoline-powered models. For European markets, rumors point toward the entry-level 520d swapping its four-cylinder engine for the smooth, 286-horsepower B57 straight-six diesel already utilized in the 540d.

Electric i5 models could benefit from BMW's technical partnership with Rimac, potentially integrating high-density cell advancements for a noticeable boost in total driving range. Comfort features also get a lift with optional massaging seats, bringing executive-level luxury to the 5 Series family. Production for the updated G60 and G61 generation is targeted for July 2027, marking the exact midpoint of a lifecycle expected to run through the early 2030s.
