BMW Expands Semi-Automated Driving Beyond the Highway

BMW is taking its driver assistance technology a step further by bringing semi-automated driving into dense city environments. Starting next year, the luxury automaker will introduce new navigation-guided assistance features designed to help drivers handle complex urban situations, including turns at intersections, multi-lane changes, right-of-way yields, and busy roundabouts. Germany will serve as the initial launch market, with an expansion to other international markets following as local regulations allow.

Expanding the Scope of Motorway and City Assistant

Until now, semi-automated driving technologies have mostly been tailored for predictable highway cruising and open country roads. By integrating active route guidance directly from BMW Maps, the updated Motorway and City Assistant system can anticipate upcoming city maneuvers well in advance. As the car approaches an intersection or a roundabout, the software helps position the vehicle correctly within its lane and guides it through the maneuver smoothly. In markets like Germany where City Assistant is already operational, the system can also handle stopping and starting automatically at red lights.

Collaborative Control Through Symbiotic Drive

Despite these advanced urban maneuvers, BMW emphasizes that this expansion remains an SAE Level 2 system rather than a fully autonomous platform. The driver must maintain visual attention and stay prepared to intervene at any moment. To keep the interaction seamless, BMW developed Symbiotic Drive, an approach that allows the driver and vehicle software to co-steer without triggering an unwanted system deactivation. By reading the driver's gaze direction and steering behavior, the car learns to differentiate between an intentional shift in lane position and an accidental drift, eliminating the annoying tug-of-war on the wheel that plagues older assistance suites.

Intuitive 3D Visualizations and Head-Up Projections

To build trust between the driver and the software, BMW uses its latest interior technology to display exactly what the car detects in real time. Leveraging the full-width Panoramic iDrive system, upcoming navigation steps and driver assistance prompts are projected across the base of the windshield directly in the driver's line of sight. Simultaneously, the central touchscreen presents a dynamic 3D rendering that overlays live route guidance, nearby traffic, and active safety status into a single, easy-to-understand visual view.

Ready-Made Hardware and Over-the-Air Delivery

In a major win for recent buyers, BMW has already built the necessary camera and radar hardware directly into its current vehicle lineup. Models including the electric iX3 and iX4, along with the latest 3 Series, 7 Series, and X5 families, are fully prepped from the factory. Once global regulatory approvals are cleared and the software is finalized, owners will be able to unlock these urban assistance features through a simple over-the-air update, delivering a far less stressful commuting experience without requiring a trip to the dealership.

The 800-HP BMW iX4 and X4 M: Resurrection of the Coupe SUV

Facelift For Bavarian Police Force BMW Vehicles

For the better part of 20 years, Bavarian police cars were manufactured with silver BMW 3 series vehicles. Prior to the silver color scheme, these vehicles sported a white base coat. Recently, the Bavarian government has decided to revamp their BMW police vehicles in terms of a color scheme. The new color scheme draws inspiration from the nostalgic white base coat used prior to 2003.  Modeled after their previously utilized retro white, blue, and yellow color scheme, new Bavarian BMW police vehicles have gone back to their roots by shedding the apparently outdated silver and green paint job. All new Bavarian police vehicle will be manufactured from BMW 3 Series Touring models with the new color scheme. This shift comes primarily from BMW's discontinuation of the Glacier Silver base color for the 3 series, but a higher resale value for white vehicles might also be a variable.  In contrast to the prior white Bavarian police BMWs, the new vehicles will be manufactured with a Mine...
