The 5th Generation BMW X5: Five Drivetrains for One SUV

The highly anticipated fifth generation of the BMW X5 is entering its final stretch of development, completing calibration drives right around its production base at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States. When it officially hits the market, this completely reimagined Sports Activity Vehicle will achieve an incredible milestone for the brand, becoming the very first BMW production model to offer customers a choice of five distinct drive system technologies. Buyers will no longer have to compromise on their preferred power source, as the lineup will span from traditional petrol and diesel engines equipped with 48 volt mild hybrid efficiency to plug in hybrids and a pioneering fully electric variant.

The undisputed headline of this generation is the world premiere of the all electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive, a model generating a massive 578 horsepower through two electric motors and an advanced all wheel drive system. This flagship electric SUV utilizes BMW's sixth generation eDrive technology, introducing a revolutionary high voltage battery concept wrapped around cylindrical cells and an ultra quick 800 volt architecture. Packing a colossal 144 kilowatt hour usable battery capacity in the United States, it represents the largest battery ever fitted to a production BMW, redefining long distance electric travel. Looking slightly further ahead, BMW will expand the five technology strategy even further in 2028 with the arrival of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the company's first ever series production hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

The 2028 Hydrogen Flat Storage System

BMW is sending a clear message that hydrogen is a vital pillar of its future powertrain strategy. Arriving in 2028, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen will showcase a highly innovative engineering breakthrough known as the Hydrogen Flat Storage system. Unlike previous fuel cell vehicle designs that forced bulky, cylindrical tanks into areas that ate up valuable passenger room, BMW has developed a flat tank system consisting of seven high pressure composite tanks reinforced with carbon fiber.

These tanks are arranged in parallel and nestled into a highly robust metal frame, utilizing the structural space beneath the vehicle floor with incredible efficiency. This clever layout guarantees that not a single inch of interior cabin space or cargo room is sacrificed. Furthermore, because this packaging is so compact, BMW can seamlessly manufacture the hydrogen fuel cell models on the exact same production lines as the standard petrol, hybrid, and electric variants, streamlining global distribution.

Ten Times Faster Driving Dynamics

Every version of the new BMW X5 will inherit a revolutionary piece of driving technology lifted directly from the upcoming Neue Klasse architecture. Known internally as the Heart of Joy, this fully in house developed central control unit integrates the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack into one supercomputer. The unit processes data and makes adjustments to the powertrain, braking system, steering sub functions, and energy recuperation ten times faster than any previous system, altering the car's behavior in a matter of milliseconds.

The result is a heavy luxury SUV that handles with the nimble poise, agility, and precision of a much smaller sports car. In the fully electric and hydrogen variants, this rapid computing power translates into incredibly smooth deceleration maneuvers while squeezing extra driving range out of the regenerative braking system. For the combustion and plug in hybrid versions, the technology works in tandem with a tenth generation transverse dynamics management system to maximize tyre grip. Paired with a near perfect 50:50 weight distribution, standard electronically controlled adaptive dampers, and wheels scaling up to a massive 23 inches, the X5 can instantly transition from a plush, cloud like highway cruiser to an aggressive canyon carver.

Level 2 Autonomy That Listens to the Driver

Beyond raw mechanics, the new X5 introduces a massive leap forward in artificial intelligence with a safety suite derived from the Neue Klasse technology clusters. The centerpiece of this digital upgrade is the optional Motorway and City Assistant, which provides seamless Entry to Exit highway automation and Address to Address guidance within tight urban environments. Instead of chasing rigid, fully detached automation, BMW has intentionally engineered these Level 2 driver assistance systems around human driving habits, creating a cooperative relationship between human instincts and artificial intelligence.

This philosophy is beautifully executed through BMW Symbiotic Drive. Unlike older assistance systems that aggressively disconnect the moment a driver touches the steering wheel or taps the accelerator, Symbiotic Drive allows the driver to override the system smoothly at any time without deactivating it. The car recognizes the human input, works with it, and then instantly reassumes its automated guidance once the driver relaxes. The entire experience is managed intuitively through the expansive BMW Panoramic iDrive display, keeping the driver completely in control.

This silent companionship extends to advanced active safety functions running quietly in the background. The Lane Keeping Assistant, for example, uses interior sensors to monitor the driver's gaze and steering behavior to determine true intent. The car will not annoyingly fight the driver over minor positioning adjustments, saving its acoustic warnings and steering interventions only for genuine, unintended lane drift or imminent side collision risks. Coupled with automatic evasive maneuvering within the lane, side collision warnings, and crossing traffic automatic braking, the new X5 acts as a highly protective, intelligent partner on the road.

The 2027 BMW 3 Series Redefines Itself in Gas and Electric

The most significant overhaul in the history of the BMW 3 Series is coming. For the first time, BMW is treating its most iconic nameplate to a parallel transformation, debuting a next-generation gasoline sedan and its all-new electric sibling, the i3 , side-by-side. While prototypes are still heavily camouflaged, the design direction is clear, and it promises to usher in a new era of aesthetics, power, and interior technology. The Neue Klasse Design Language Takes Over If you want a sneak peek at the 2027 3 Series, look no further than the recently unveiled iX3 electric SUV. BMW’s design strategy is aligning its gas and electric models, meaning both the new 3 Series and i3 will embrace the clean, modern look of the Neue Klasse platform. This shift finally moves away from the more contentious kidney grille designs of the recent past, favoring a flatter, tauter aesthetic with tidier proportions and minimal visual clutter. The key difference between the two sedans will be subtle: the com...

Facelift For Bavarian Police Force BMW Vehicles

For the better part of 20 years, Bavarian police cars were manufactured with silver BMW 3 series vehicles. Prior to the silver color scheme, these vehicles sported a white base coat. Recently, the Bavarian government has decided to revamp their BMW police vehicles in terms of a color scheme. The new color scheme draws inspiration from the nostalgic white base coat used prior to 2003.  Modeled after their previously utilized retro white, blue, and yellow color scheme, new Bavarian BMW police vehicles have gone back to their roots by shedding the apparently outdated silver and green paint job. All new Bavarian police vehicle will be manufactured from BMW 3 Series Touring models with the new color scheme. This shift comes primarily from BMW's discontinuation of the Glacier Silver base color for the 3 series, but a higher resale value for white vehicles might also be a variable.  In contrast to the prior white Bavarian police BMWs, the new vehicles will be manufactured with a Mine...

The 800-HP BMW iX4 and X4 M: Resurrection of the Coupe SUV

In an industry where the "crossover coupe" has recently faced a wave of cancellations, BMW is choosing a different path.
