BMW Celebrates 40 Years of the M3 with Special Edition

Although the legendary E30 M3 debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, official production began in 1986, making four decades since the original first hit public roads. To mark forty years of continuous performance evolution, BMW is releasing an ultra-exclusive special edition specifically tailored for the Chinese market. Officially named the BMW M3 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, this rare release is strictly capped at just forty total units, split evenly between twenty sedans and twenty long roof wagons.

Bold Colors and Distinct Visual Signatures

To distinguish these rare collector cars, BMW is assigning a unique color palette to each body style. The G80 sedan wears the iconic, retro inspired Laguna Seca Blue paint, accented by black 826M alloy wheels and blue brake calipers. In contrast, the G81 M3 Touring wagon commands attention in a deep Wildberry finish, swapping out the black wheels for a eye catching bronze finish paired with vibrant red brake calipers. Both variants receive a sinister front profile upgrade, featuring a fully blacked out kidney grille paired with smoked headlight housings.

Commemorative Badging and Cabin Details

Exclusive 40 Jahre M3 branding is woven throughout the entire vehicle, appearing on the center console, front headrests, side sills, and even the roof panel. The sedan features a lightweight carbon fiber roof, whereas the wagon retains a standard roof construction. Because retooling the factory assembly line for a niche production run would be cost prohibitive, BMW opted against engineering a carbon roof for the Touring, especially given that the current G81 generation is entering the final chapters of its lifecycle.

Imported Luxury and Performance Pricing

Unlike many mainstream BMW models assembled locally in China, the high performance M3 lineup is built in Munich and imported directly, making these special editions premium investments. The all wheel drive Competition sedan is priced at RMB 1,038,000, while the Touring wagon retails for RMB 1,068,000. Converted to United States currency, those figures translate to approximately $154,000 and $159,000, respectively.

To sweeten the deal for well healed buyers, BMW includes the M Driver Package as standard equipment on all forty units. This unlocks a raised top speed limiter of 180 miles per hour for the sedan and 174 miles per hour for the wagon, giving owners ultimate performance potential for track day outings.
