Is BMW Discontinuing Diesel Vehicles in America after 2018?

According to an official statement from BMW of North America, the company will begin to focus exclusively on PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) rather than diesel alternatives due to a sharp increase in sales of the former and an equally dramatic decrease in sales of the latter. Sales indicate the drop in diesel sales is directly correlated to a customer preference for high performance gasoline alternatives.

The policy change affects several vehicles including the 540d xDrive which was only recently released this year; however, BMW states the decision for a future release of a diesel X5 has not been decided, so there is still hope for the diesel heads out there. Additionally, the statement indicates a PHEV model X5 will be released in 2021.
