The 2027 BMW 3 Series Redefines Itself in Gas and Electric

The most significant overhaul in the history of the BMW 3 Series is coming. For the first time, BMW is treating its most iconic nameplate to a parallel transformation, debuting a next-generation gasoline sedan and its all-new electric sibling, the i3, side-by-side. While prototypes are still heavily camouflaged, the design direction is clear, and it promises to usher in a new era of aesthetics, power, and interior technology.

The Neue Klasse Design Language Takes Over

If you want a sneak peek at the 2027 3 Series, look no further than the recently unveiled iX3 electric SUV. BMW’s design strategy is aligning its gas and electric models, meaning both the new 3 Series and i3 will embrace the clean, modern look of the Neue Klasse platform. This shift finally moves away from the more contentious kidney grille designs of the recent past, favoring a flatter, tauter aesthetic with tidier proportions and minimal visual clutter. The key difference between the two sedans will be subtle: the combustion model (codenamed G50) will utilize the proven CLAR platform, while the EV sibling will sit on the dedicated Neue Klasse architecture.

The i3 and the Inevitable Electric M3

The i3 nameplate is making a monumental return, transforming from a quirky city car into the electric alternative to the core 3 Series. The mid-grade performance is expected to launch first, likely carrying the i3 50 xDrive badge. This dual-motor setup is predicted to deliver around 450 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, matching the performance philosophy of its iX3 sibling. Crucially, the smaller, more aerodynamic sedan shape is expected to push the driving range well in excess of 400 miles, making it a true long-distance competitor.

This electric foundation also sets the stage for the highly anticipated iM3. As rivals like the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air Sapphire redefine the performance luxury space, it is only logical that BMW M will introduce a ferocious electric version of its most legendary sport sedan, potentially utilizing a multi-motor setup to deliver unparalleled EV dynamics.

The Gasoline Heart Beats On

Despite the massive investment in electric technology, the gasoline-powered 3 Series is not going anywhere. It will debut alongside the i3, looking virtually identical but maintaining its classic powertrains. The base model, likely the 330, will continue to feature an updated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making around 260 horsepower, while the powerful M340 will retain its beloved turbocharged inline-six, pushing close to 400 horsepower. This twin strategy ensures that BMW continues to cater to every performance enthusiast, regardless of their preferred power source.

Panoramic Vision: A Revolutionary Digital Cockpit

Regardless of what powers the wheels, the biggest shift will be found inside the cabin. The new 3 Series interior will ditch the conventional driver’s display in favor of BMW Panoramic Vision. This revolutionary system uses projection technology to display customizable widget panels across a band near the base of the windshield, spanning from pillar to pillar. The most critical information, such as speed, range, and navigation, is projected directly into the driver’s line of sight on the left, while the rest of the display can be configured with up to six customizable widgets.

This cutting-edge system is complemented by a next-generation 3D Head-Up Display and a high-definition central touchscreen. The result is a radically de-cluttered yet information-rich cockpit that keeps the driver’s eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel, promising the largest interactive change in the 3 Series' history.

Facelift For Bavarian Police Force BMW Vehicles

For the better part of 20 years, Bavarian police cars were manufactured with silver BMW 3 series vehicles. Prior to the silver color scheme, these vehicles sported a white base coat. Recently, the Bavarian government has decided to revamp their BMW police vehicles in terms of a color scheme. The new color scheme draws inspiration from the nostalgic white base coat used prior to 2003.  Modeled after their previously utilized retro white, blue, and yellow color scheme, new Bavarian BMW police vehicles have gone back to their roots by shedding the apparently outdated silver and green paint job. All new Bavarian police vehicle will be manufactured from BMW 3 Series Touring models with the new color scheme. This shift comes primarily from BMW's discontinuation of the Glacier Silver base color for the 3 series, but a higher resale value for white vehicles might also be a variable.  In contrast to the prior white Bavarian police BMWs, the new vehicles will be manufactured with a Mine...
