The Next-Generation BMW 7 Series: Key Updates Revealed in 2027 Facelift

BMW is preparing a significant mid-cycle refresh for its flagship 7 Series sedan. Recent spy photos of a prototype testing on the German Autobahn have offered a glimpse of the extensive design and technology updates coming to the 2027 model, confirming this will be more than a mild refresh.

Exterior Design Changes

The most striking change is the confirmed return of the controversial split-headlight design. For months, prototypes were seen with clever camouflage that hid the distinct two-part lighting signature, but new spy shots reveal the final look: a thin, upper LED strip for daytime running lights and the main headlight cluster positioned lower in the bumper. This divisive new design is expected to be adopted by other models, including the X7 SUV.

At the rear, the facelifted 7 Series will feature a new full-width light bar that spans the trunk and is bisected by the BMW roundel. This design element, first seen on the Vision Neue Klasse concept, indicates BMW's intention to unify the design language of its flagship models with its upcoming lineup of next-generation electric vehicles.

A New Era of Interior Technology

Inside, the 7 Series will undergo a major technological transformation, influenced heavily by the Neue Klasse concept cars. The familiar dual-screen iDrive 8.5 system will be replaced by the new iDrive X platform. This new setup will be centered around a single large touchscreen and will introduce a new "Panoramic display" that projects critical information across the entire width of the windshield, creating a futuristic driver interface. This technology will first debut in the all-electric Neue Klasse iX3 before making its way to the 7 Series.

Production and Release Timeline

The new 7 Series facelift is scheduled to enter production in July 2026. This timeline suggests an official reveal will likely take place in the spring of 2026, with customer deliveries beginning in the second half of the year. The refreshed model will continue to be sold in the United States alongside its all-electric counterpart, the i7.

Facelift For Bavarian Police Force BMW Vehicles

For the better part of 20 years, Bavarian police cars were manufactured with silver BMW 3 series vehicles. Prior to the silver color scheme, these vehicles sported a white base coat. Recently, the Bavarian government has decided to revamp their BMW police vehicles in terms of a color scheme. The new color scheme draws inspiration from the nostalgic white base coat used prior to 2003.  Modeled after their previously utilized retro white, blue, and yellow color scheme, new Bavarian BMW police vehicles have gone back to their roots by shedding the apparently outdated silver and green paint job. All new Bavarian police vehicle will be manufactured from BMW 3 Series Touring models with the new color scheme. This shift comes primarily from BMW's discontinuation of the Glacier Silver base color for the 3 series, but a higher resale value for white vehicles might also be a variable.  In contrast to the prior white Bavarian police BMWs, the new vehicles will be manufactured with a Mine...

For those who recall the original MINI Cooper Electric model, a limited few were lucky enough to lease the vehicle when it was released back in 2008, and it served as a late-stage beta test for future BMW and MINI electric vehicles such as the ActiveE and i3. Representatives from MINI have confirmed that the US model MINI Cooper Electric SE will operate on 94Ah batteries similar to the i3. Although there will be only one battery configuration available, optional components, such as wheels and tires, can affect the range. The new MINI will feature a J1772 charging port which can take an empty battery to roughly 80% in approximately 30...
