BMW is reportedly planning to extend the production of its popular internal combustion engine (ICE) coupes and convertibles for several more years than initially expected. According to rumors circulating on BMW forums, the company may continue manufacturing the current generation 4 Series (G22/G23) and the high-performance M4 (G82/G83) until mid-2029.
An Extended Life Cycle for Gas-Powered Coupes
If this reported plan proves accurate, the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible would remain in production for nearly nine years, and the M4 for over eight years—significantly longer than BMW’s typical 6–7 year model life cycle.
This extension applies to the smaller performance models as well: the 2 Series Coupe (G42) and the M2 Coupe (G87) are also rumored to continue production until July 2029. This means enthusiasts will have a choice of gas-powered performance coupes for at least the next four years. While the high-performance M2 CS variant will exit production earlier, an all-wheel-drive M2 xDrive is expected to enter production in August 2026.
BMW’s Flexible Powertrain Strategy
This decision signals BMW's commitment to a flexible, market-driven strategy, leveraging its modular CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform. The platform allows the company to extend the life of existing models and refresh them without needing to develop an entirely new chassis, effectively buying time to adapt to evolving market demands.
The commitment to ICE M cars is further evidenced by the upcoming next-generation gas-powered M3 Sedan (G84), which is rumored to enter production in July 2028 and continue until late 2034.
This long-term plan confirms that BMW performance models with gas engines are likely here to stay for at least another decade, despite the brand’s major investment in the all-electric Neue Klasse platform. The extended production cycle also gives BMW more time to determine the future of the M4 line. Given that BMW will offer two next-generation M3 sedans (one ICE and one all-electric), it is possible the company may adopt a similar dual-powertrain approach for the M4 after 2029.
